Once installed, there are three levels of encyclopaedia, ranging from the complete version to a more elementary level suitable for children. Searches can be made both alphabetically, and also by typing in a key word: results appear in six categories, ranging from the encyclopaedia and thesaurus to images, multimedia and Web sites.
This range of options shows that the team at Britannica has embraced interactivity, and used it well in presenting their electronic version of their product. However, the fact that the encyclopaedia is one of the world's premiere source of information ensures that content comes ahead of design. So if you want to read a detailed history of Chile, or find out about the novels of Aldous Huxley, then this is the package for you; but if you want zany prose or hip graphics, it probably isn't.
For measured summaries this product can't be beaten. One of the best elements is that Britannica has not rested on its laurels, and has added several strings to the printed edition's bow. There are extra elements, such as a world atlas and interactive timelines in which selected topics are shown in their development through history. Encyclopaedia Britannica continues to offer an unbeatable combination of knowledge and innovation. --Toby Green
For students in upper elementary, middle, and high school, this collection adds the Britannica Student Encyclopedia with 15,000 entries geared to school. Britannica's Elementary Encyclopedia is written for children in the early grades and designed to instill a look-it-up habit. Also added are two Merriam-Webster dictionaries and thesauruses with nearly 555,000 definitions, synonyms, and antonyms that users can access from encyclopedia articles with a single click.
Additional tools feature an updated world atlas, timelines, and more. Take a tour of the world through more than 1,300 clickable maps linked to articles. People, events, and discoveries of the past come to life on 25 timelines with 6,900 points hotlinked to related articles. Britannica's exclusive KnowledgeNavigator tool, an interactive browser, is perfect for creative brainstorming, discovering new ideas, and exploring different topics. Rounding out the collection are some 21,000 images, videos, audio clips, and animated maps, as well as a clever research organizer. END
